05 | Summer Magazine 2017

Hello everyone and welcome once again, to the latest edition of our school magazine.  As we approach the end of another academic year, there is so much for us to celebrate and so much for us to remember.

Sadly, our dear friend and colleague David Nicklin, passed away very recently following a short battle against leukemia.  Dave was a well respected and well loved member of staff who will be dearly missed by our school community.  Working with Dave for around 24 years, I am fully appreciative of everything he did to help support the young people in his care.  He had the unique ability to inspire people, whilst demonstrating the passion and determination to help them all succeed.

On behalf of his wife Lindsay and from all staff across Educational Diversity, I would like to say a huge thank you to all of the kind messages and tributes that have been received over the last few days.

Following on from our successful Ofsted Inspection completed earlier on in this term, we are continuing to drive forward improvements.  We have recently said goodbye to our Year 11 students, the majority of whom are moving onto College or employment opportunities and we would like to wish them all the best for the future.

We have lots of things to look forward to, including our annual barbecue to raise funds for Leukemia Care which is taking place at Athena on Tuesday 18th July from 12.30 onward.  There will be lots of opportunities to win prizes and take part in different activities, so let us pray for some nice weather!

A number of key staff are either retiring or moving on at the end of this term and so I am sure you will join me in thanking them for all their hard work and commitment to Educational Diversity.  Lesley Slack who was the founder member of the Home and Hospital Education Service, Karen Wood, a long serving English teacher, Ashleigh Beasley and Danny Tomkinson, who are two  SSA's, will all be leaving Athena but we hope they will come and visit us to let us know how they are getting on.  Dave Hatch and John Gayle from our Mountford Centre will also be leaving, along with Mark Cowell from the Pegasus Centre.

I hope you enjoy the magazine and until term starts again in September have a lovely summer holiday.

This is the fifth edition of our school magazine and possibly our most adventurous to date. As always I have a huge list of people to thank: Rachel Day at Streetlife, Paul Maynard MP and Simon Renwick, Create Education, Hayley Kay and everyone at Wave FM, photographers Steve Ashton and Dougie Wallace, The Anti-Frackers on Preston New Road, Channel 4 journalist and newsreaders Cathy Newman and Jon Snow plus Hayley Barlow at Channel 4 news plus all the other helpers including Karen Wood my proof-reader par excellence who is saying goodbye to take early retirement, so this could be the last magazine without spelling errors and Fiona Shaw for stepping in and joining us on the trip to London at the last minute.

This year we entered the national Shine Media Awards again. Articles and photography from our Christmas 2016 and Summer 2016 were submitted and although we didn’t make the grand finals we improved upon last year and even received some positive feedback from the Consultant Editor of the Daily Mail and Final Judge Liz Hunt,  said, “Good use of pictures and content was well sold.  Slightly crazy but great fun and attitude – seems to capture the energy and humour of the school in a wonderfully evocative way.”

Each edition of this magazine reflects a great deal of work by the students. I am full of admiration for them, they push themselves in numerous ways to achieve so much and I’d like to thank everyone of them for their effort and hard work.
