RE: VE Day 80th Anniversary Celebrations on Thursday 8th May
Dear Parents and Carers,
On Thursday 8th May, we will be marking VE Day’s 80th anniversary with a celebration here at school, and we would love for our students to get involved in the spirit of the occasion.
VE Day, or Victory in Europe Day, marks the end of World War II in Europe on 8th May 1945, when Allied forces accepted the unconditional surrender of Nazi Germany. It was a day of huge celebration across Britain and Europe, as people came together to mark the end of six long years of war.
We will be recreating a traditional street party atmosphere, complete with flags, bunting, themed decorations, music, and classic street party food. Students will enjoy round-table gatherings with plain-coloured tableware and cloths to reflect the era’s simplicity, and we will decorate the space with large photos from 1945 street parties to help set the scene.
As part of the day’s events, we will be listening to Winston Churchill’s famous ‘end of the war in Europe’ speech, enjoying old-time music and playing WW2-era games. To help students understand the significance of VE Day, there will also be brief awareness sessions during form time in the lead-up to the celebration.
To add to the occasion, students are invited to come dressed in red, white and/or blue on the day, if they wish.
We look forward to a memorable and educational day of commemoration and celebration.
Warm regards,
Vic O’Farrell
